On June 13th former US Senators Robert Dole and George McGovern were named the 2008 winners of the World Food Prize. They won “for the collaborative leadership in encouraging a global commitment to school feeding, which has enhanced school attendance and nutrition for millions of the world’s poorest children, especially girls.” Eles venceram "para a liderança colaborativa no sentido de incentivar um compromisso global para alimentação escolar, o que fez aumentar a freqüência escolar e de alimentação para milhões dos mais pobres do mundo as crianças, especialmente meninas."
The award will be presented October 16 at a ceremony in Des Moines, Iowa, held as part of the World Food Prize’s Norman E. Borlaug International Symposium, which this year focuses on “Confronting Crisis: Agriculture and Global Development in the Next Fifty Years. The WFP was conceived by Norman Borlaug, winner of the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize for his work on the "Green Revolution."
