To no one’s great surprise, the World Trade Organization (WTO) Appellate Body of three judges agreed with the original decision released last September on Brazil’s claim that the US was subsidizing cotton production inconsistent with its obligations under the WTO. Als niemand de grote verrassing, de Wereld Handels Organisatie (WTO) Beroepsinstantie van drie rechters die met de oorspronkelijke beschikking vrijgegeven in september vorig jaar op Brazilië's bewering dat de VS was het subsidiëren van de productie van katoen met haar verplichtingen in het kader van de WTO. They rejected all 19 US claims of error against the original ruling. Zij verwierpen al 19 US claims van de fout tegen de oorspronkelijke uitspraak. Despite the significance of the ruling, it does not change the fundamentals of the WTO negotiations. Ondanks de betekenis van de uitspraak, maar verandert niets aan de grondslagen van de WTO-onderhandelingen.

The end of 2004 marked 11 years of experience in economic integration under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Het einde van 2004 was 11 jaar ervaring in de economische integratie in het kader van de North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). In February the Economic Research Service (ERS) of USDA released a Congressionally-mandated biennial report titled “NAFTA at 11: The Growing Integration of North American Agriculture.” The analysis provides insights on how trade agreements can facilitate the movement of products and capital to meet the changing needs of consumers and create new opportunities for producers, while still providing transition protection for politically sensitive products. In februari heeft de Economic Research Service (ERS) van USDA vrijgegeven Congressionally een gemandateerde tweejaarlijks rapport getiteld "NAFTA op 11: de toenemende integratie van de Noord-Amerikaanse landbouw." Het onderzoek biedt inzicht in hoe de handelsregelingen kan het verkeer van goederen en kapitaal aan voldoen aan de veranderende behoeften van consumenten en creëert nieuwe kansen voor producenten, maar met behoud van een overgang bescherming bij politiek gevoelige producten.

At a WTO Trade Negotiations Committee meeting in Geneva, Switzerland the week of February 14, Deputy US Trade Representative Peter Allgeier suggested an aggressive agenda for negotiations over the next two years. Op een WTO-handelsbesprekingen vergadering van het comite in Genève, Zwitserland, de week van 14 februari, adjunct-Amerikaanse handelsvertegenwoordiger Peter Allgeier duidden op een agressieve agenda voor de onderhandelingen over de komende twee jaar. The process is already several years behind the schedule envisioned as part of the Uruguay Round Agreement that was completed in 1994. Het proces is al enkele jaren achter de schema opgezet als onderdeel van de Uruguay Round Agreement dat werd voltooid in 1994. There is no logical economic reason to delay the process any longer. Er is geen enkele logische reden om de economische vertraging van het proces nog langer.

While developed countries are under pressure to sharply reduce domestic subsidies for agriculture in a new World Trade Organization (WTO) trade agreement, China is reducing taxes on production agriculture and increasing subsidies to farmers. Terwijl de ontwikkelde landen onder druk om scherp te verminderen binnenlandse subsidies voor de landbouw in een nieuwe Wereld Handels Organisatie (WTO) handelsovereenkomst, China is een verlaging van de belastingen op de productie van landbouw en vergroting van subsidies aan de landbouwers. The Chinese Communist Party recently released “2005 No. 1 Document” outlining measures to support rural incomes, the second year in a row that the number one document has addressed this issue. De Chinese Communistische Partij onlangs vrijgegeven "2005 nr. 1 Document" uitgebracht, maatregelen ter ondersteuning van rurale inkomens, het tweede jaar op rij dat het aantal een document heeft deze kwestie. Rural peasants have traditionally provided the backbone of support for national governments and discontent in rural areas has not gone unheeded. Landelijk boeren hebben van oudsher de ruggengraat van de steun voor nationale regeringen en ontevredenheid op het platteland is niet verdwenen dovemansoren gericht.

In late January the Economics Minister from Switzerland, Joseph Deiss, told reporters that ministers from 25 countries met at the World Economic Forum in Davos and agreed to step up the pace of the Doha Round trade talks so an agreement could be reached in 2006. Eind januari heeft de minister van Economische Zaken uit Zwitserland, Joseph Deiss, vertelde verslaggevers dat de ministers uit 25 landen ontmoetten elkaar op het World Economic Forum in Davos en zijn overeengekomen om het tempo van de Doha-ronde handelsbesprekingen, zodat een akkoord kon worden bereikt in 2006. The World Trade Organization (WTO) has already set a full ministerial meeting of all member countries for December 2005 in Hong Kong. De Wereld Handels Organisatie (WTO) heeft al een volledige ministeriële bijeenkomst van alle deelnemende landen in december 2005 in Hong Kong. Freer trade in agriculture was one of the five areas mentioned by Mr. Deiss as being critical to the success of the negotiations. Vrijere handel in de landbouw was een van de vijf genoemde gebieden door de heer DEISS als zijnde essentieel voor het welslagen van de onderhandelingen.
