As the time for critical decisions in the Doha round of trade negotiations has arrived, politicians, business people and trade policy analysts have become increasingly distracted by the price of petroleum and government interventions in energy markets for political reasons. The 2006 negotiations on a new WTO trade policy agreement will unofficially begin January 25-29 on the sidelines of the annual World Economic Forum gathering of world political and economic leaders in Davos, Switzerland. De 2006 onderhandelingen over een nieuw WTO-akkoord zal handelsbeleid officieus beginnen 25-29 januari in de marge van de jaarlijkse World Economic Forum verzamelen van de mondiale politieke en economische leiders in Davos, Zwitserland. Trade officials from over 30 countries are expected to be represented at the informal gathering. Handel ambtenaren uit meer dan 30 landen zullen naar verwachting worden vertegenwoordigd op de informele bijeenkomst. The week of January 23-27 is also “Agriculture Week” at WTO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. De week van 23-27 januari ook "Landbouw Week" op WTO-hoofdkwartier in Genève, Zwitserland. Everyone agrees that agriculture is the key issue, but it may not be the one that unlocks the gridlock. Iedereen is het erover eens dat de landbouw is de belangrijkste kwestie, maar het kan niet zo zijn dat een ontgrendelt de impasse te geraken.

Sometimes a report that confirms the obvious is still worthwhile news. Soms wordt een verslag bevestigt dat het voor de hand liggende is nog steeds de moeite waard nieuws. Such are the estimates from the International Society for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications (ISAAA) that farmers around the world planted 222 million acres of biotech crops in 2005, an 11 percent increase from the 200 million acres planted in 2004 and the ninth consecutive year of double digit growth rates. Dit zijn de schattingen van de International Society for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications (ISAAA) dat de boeren over de hele wereld 222 miljoen hectare beplant van biotech-gewassen in 2005, een stijging van 11 procent van de 200 miljoen hectare beplant in 2004 en de negende achtereenvolgende jaar van dubbele groeicijfers. The growth rate in plantings for 2005 was 23 percent in developing countries and 5 percent in developed countries, with developing countries accounting for 38 percent of the biotech acres planted. Limited progress in the Doha Round negotiations of the WTO has caused some people to suggest that the era of negotiations to reduce market access restrictions and other trade distorting domestic policies has passed and the way to move toward a more open world trading system is by using the WTO dispute resolution process to enforce the existing rules. Beperkte voortgang in de Doha-ronde van de WTO-onderhandelingen heeft geleid tot enkele mensen om te suggereren dat het tijdperk van de onderhandelingen om de toegang tot de markt en andere handelsverstorende binnenlandse beleid is verstreken en de weg te verplaatsen naar een meer open wereld handelssysteem is met behulp van de WTO-geschillenregeling voor de handhaving van de bestaande regels. Such a shift in strategy would undermine the original goals of the GATT and the WTO, reduce incentives for countries to make meaningful market access changes, increase the uncertainty in WTO trade policy rules and strengthen the hand of those who seek a mercantilist, managed trade system. Much of the attention on biotech crops in 2005 focused on the billionth acre of biotech crops planted in early May and harvested in early October. Een groot deel van de aandacht op biotech-gewassen in 2005 toegespitst op de miljardste acre van biotech-gewassen geplant in begin mei en geoogst in begin oktober. These milestones confirmed that biotech crops are now firmly established as part of food production systems worldwide.
