The suspension of the Doha Round of WTO trade talks and a host of other international political issues have reduced consideration of Russia joining the WTO to a third or fourth tier issue. De opschorting van de Doha-ronde van WTO-handelsgesprekken en tal van andere internationale politieke vraagstukken hebben verminderd behandeling van Rusland tot de WTO tot een derde of vierde categorie probleem. This demotion allows the opportunity for a fundamental reassessment of Russia joining the WTO. Deze degradatie maakt de kans voor een fundamentele herwaardering van Rusland tot de WTO.

As biotech crops have become widely grown around the world the safety of eating products from livestock and poultry fed biotech crops has been an issue. Zoals biogewassen zijn geworden op grote schaal geteeld in de wereld van de veiligheid van het eten van producten van vee en pluimvee gevoed biotech-gewassen is een probleem. While supporters of biotech crops may think the issue is settled, it remains unsettled in the minds of many people and is a critical issue in international trade. Terwijl de supporters van biotech-gewassen zou kunnen denken dat het probleem is opgelost, blijft het onrustig in de hoofden van veel mensen en is een kritiek punt in de internationale handel. The Council for Agricultural Research and Technology (CAST) recently released a report “Safety of Meat, Milk, and Eggs from Animals Fed Crops Derived from Modern Biotechnology” that provides a good overview of recent research. De Raad voor Landbouwkundig Onderzoek en Technologie (CAST) heeft onlangs een rapport "Veiligheid van vlees, melk en eieren afkomstig van dieren Teelten Afgeleid van de moderne biotechnologie" dat geeft een goed overzicht van recent onderzoek. The report is based on work supported by the United States Department of Agriculture and Iowa State University. Brazil is well known for its successes in WTO cases against the EU sugar program and the US cotton program. Brazilië is bekend om zijn successen in de WTO-zaken tegen het Europese suikerbeleid programma en de VS katoen programma. Brazil’s recent moves to provide government assistance to soybean growers have raised questions about violation of its own commitments to the WTO. Brazilië is de recente stappen om overheidssteun aan soja-telers hebben vragen gesteld over schending van haar eigen verplichtingen tot de WTO. Its actions point up the fundamental political fact that governments cannot resist intervening when economic difficulties arise among farmers and ranchers, particularly in a Presidential election year. As the Doha Round of WTO trade negotiations drag on, questions have been raised about the importance of exports for US farmers and ranchers. Efforts to boil down trade numbers to one dollar figure or percent of production have left much information unstated. The lack of progress at the latest WTO meeting of Trade Ministers in Geneva, Switzerland narrowed the almost five years of agricultural negotiations in the Doha Round to three key factors: 1) a political decision at the G-8 summit later this month to push for completing the round, 2) the Director-General of the WTO Pascal Lamy creating a draft text of an agricultural agreement, and 3) the WTO deciding that trade expansion remains its core mission. Het gebrek aan voortgang op de laatste WTO-bijeenkomst van de ministers van Handel in Genève, Zwitserland vernauwd de bijna vijf jaar van onderhandelingen in de Doha-ronde op drie belangrijke factoren: 1) een politiek besluit op de G-8-top later deze maand aan te dringen op het voltooien van de ronde, 2) de directeur-generaal van de WTO Pascal Lamy het maken van een ontwerp-tekst van een landbouw-overeenkomst, en 3) de WTO beslist dat de uitbreiding van de handel blijft haar kerntaken. The first two will be much easier to deal with than the third one. De eerste twee zal het veel eenvoudiger te behandelen dan de derde.
