The Humane Society of the United States is targeting two more restaurant chains in its ongoing animal welfare/animal rights campaign.
The latest targets are Steak ‘n Shake and Jack in the Box. HSUS is trying to pressure the companies to stop purchasing eggs from caged hens, pork from crated pigs and poultry from processors that use certain slaughter methods. HSUS has purchased shares of both companies so it can legally propose internal changes.
HSUS has been successful with similar campaigns, forcing restaurant chains such as Burger King, Denny’s and Hardee’s to adopt policies more to the group’s liking. Most recently, Oklahoma City-based Sonic Corporation—which operates 3,500 restaurants in more than 40 states—announced a new animal welfare policy. According to HSUS, Sonic’s new policy will result in the company phasing-in the use of cage-free eggs, as well as pork from facilities that do not confine breeding pigs in gestation crates. The move drew praise from HSUS.
