The news has spread around the world that on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at age 95 Dr. Norman Borlaug passed away at his home in Dallas, Texas. We all mourn his passing. He shall be missed. Borlaug won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970 for his work to stop world hunger, he was known around the world as the father of the Green Revolution, and he helped found The World Food Prize. Beyond the numerous accolades and well-deserved recognition bestowed upon Dr. Borlaug over the years, he did something that each one of us should also strive to do - he made the world a better place...

The vast number of people of people saved from starvation by Dr. Borlaug's work and effort is staggering. But the work is not done. Feeding the world going forward will require ongoing effort, will, and ingenuity. Dr. Borlaug set the example. He was one of the greatest humanitarians the world will ever know. It is up to each of us to do our part, to do what we can to match his dedication and perserverance. He set the bar, now it is up to us to keep reaching for it.

To quote from the press release on Dr. Borlaug's passing:

“It is the hope of the Borlaug family that his life be an example to all. We would like his life be a model for making a difference in the lives of others and to bring about efforts to end human misery for all mankind,” his children stated. “One of his favorite quotes was ‘reach for the stars. Although you will never touch them, if you reach hard enough, you will find that you get a little ‘star dust’ on you in the process!’”

More can be learned about Dr. Borlaug, and his memorial service, at The Borlaug Institute website.

Dr. Borlaug, you shall be missed and we all thank you. Rest in peace.
