We are committed to promoting free trade and agricultural biotechnology through farmer-led educational initiatives that target public officials, opinion leaders, and the agricultural community. We are effective because we recruit credible voices to speak on behalf of farmers who have firsthand knowledge of how much expanded trade and innovations in biotechnology mean to rural America.
We believe that free trade is good for farmers because it helps them sell what they grow to people all around the world. Free trade keeps food prices low for consumers, makes a wide variety of products available everywhere, and increases economic prosperity. It also spreads freedom and democracy to countries that have not experienced enough of either.
Biotechnology is no less beneficial. It helps farmers increase their productivity by boosting crop yield and providing protection from pests, viruses, and poor weather. Genetically modified goods specifically provide hope that farmers in the United States and abroad will be able to feed a growing world.
In the 21st century, trade and technology are inextricably linked. Quotas and tariffs used to be the most important barriers to open trade--and today they remain significant, especially for farm products. Yet concerns about technology, both feigned and authentic, are increasingly used to justify protectionism. These fears are not based upon scientific fact, but upon a mixture of unfortunate misunderstandings owing to ignorance and deceptive propaganda spread by entrenched special interests.
