George Will is a conservative political columnist who doesn't often get a lot of attention in agricultural circles. That may have changed this week following his most recent column in the Washington Post (Sunday, March 8, 2009). He appears to have fallen ‘hook, line and sinker’ for the persuasions of "food activist" Michael Pollan...
Steve Cornett nails it with his title 'Columnist sips the Pollan Kool-Aid'. Cornett is editor emeritus at Beef Today, and this column is part of the Cattle Drive e-newsletter from that publication and is posted on AgWeb.com in his March 9 'Out to Pasture' blog.
For those not familiar with Pollan, he is the Knight Professor of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley. He is the author of “In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto” and "The Omnivore's Dilemma" and was termed by Mother Jones magazine (March/April 2009) as "America's favorite food intellectual". He says food is too cheap, and puts blame on agriculture for climate change amongst other things.
Will and Pollan make for an odd couple. That wasn't lost on Cornett as he states, "Somebody better get busy presenting the other side of this story, because now we have both our new president and a leading conservative thinker playing footsy with a most radical concept."
He’s absolutely right! Steve Cornett took the first step. He addressed several of the assumptions made by Pollan and supported by Will with solid information, facts and substantiated data (click here to read his full piece).
It’s up to the rest of us to take the next steps. We’re in!
