The GM canola harvest has begun in central western New South Wales, and despite a difficult season, growers are happy with the results.
Ungarie farmer Graham Barron planted 100 hectares of glyphosate-resistant canola this year.
He says yields and oil content were down on the average, but that's the fault of the season, not the variety.
"It went about 0.7 [tonne] to the hectare, the GM stuff was always a better crop [than the non-GM canola]," he says.
"It was thicker. I was pleased with how vigourous it was early. We got a better germination in the GM.
"We're yet to harvest the conventional canola, but it doesn't look the crop that the other stuff was."
