Our congratulations to U.S. President-elect Barack Obama. Throughout his campaign, and in his election night speech, the themes of ‘leadership’, ‘unity’, ‘keeping promises’ and the need for ‘a force to make things right’ were eloquently stated and delivered to U.S. voters. The world was listening too.

In light of the current global economic downturn and high food prices, those themes and promises are extremely important and were not taken lightly. Our challenge to president-elect Obama is to send an immediate and strong, positive message to the world indicating that, under his watch, the United States will not embrace protectionism or economic isolationism. A move to protectionism would break a promise – a promise of American leadership on global economic issues. When it comes to trade policy - for the sake of the American economy and America’s image abroad – it’s time to lead by example.
