Regarding your editorial "Pelosi's Trade Priorities" (Oct. 1): While Congress is in turmoil over the $700 billion bailout proposal, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ought to be focusing on creating American jobs through eliminating our even more costly $800 billion U.S. trade deficit through free-trade agreements. Congress should also end the double taxation of Americans overseas, which penalizes our citizens making it much more costly if they live overseas to sell U.S. exports.

Speaker Pelosi's refusal to bring the Colombia Free Trade Agreement to a vote brings joy to Tokyo since her action insures that Komatsu, not Caterpillar, will sell its construction equipment in Colombia. How the United Auto Workers can possibly believe that handing Colombian imports to the Japanese on a silver platter is in the best interest of its members is beyond comprehension. Switzerland, with the enthusiastic support of its union leaders, is currently negotiating free-trade agreements with both China and Japan -- countries with which it enjoys trade surpluses, because its citizens, not being penalized with double taxation to keep them home, go there and create more jobs at home through increased Swiss penetration of these markets.
