National Biofuels Action Plan released |

A National Biofuels Action Plan (NBAP) designed to speed the development of a sustainable biofuels industry was released Tuesday, October 7 by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Dr. Mark Stowers, VP of Research and Development at POET was in Washington for the announcement, he tells Brownfield the plan is a highpoint for ethanol production especially when it comes to cellulosic ethanol
“The National Biofuels Action Plan speaks to ways which we can improve sustainability, feedstock production, feedstock logistics, our conversion of cellulosic materials into ethanol, to distribution infrastructure, blending higher inclusion of ethanol into transportation fuels and environment, health and safety considerations,” said Stowers. “This is really the first comprehensive guidance given by DOE and USDA.”
One of the most exciting aspects of the Plan, according to Stowers, calls for the use of higher ethanol blends in cars.
“Moving toward more ethanol in our transportation fuels reduces our dependence on foreign oil, improves the environmental foot print that all of us have when we use our vehicles and our small engines, our lawnmowers, our snowmobiles and so forth,” Stowers said. “The other part is it actually lowers the cost of fuel at the pump for the consumer.”
POET is urging U.S. EPA to take the necessary action toward adopting the higher ethanol blends as soon as possible.
