The Tasmanian Poppy Growers Association says extending the state's ban on genetically modified crops will put the industry at risk.

A joint parliamentary committee recommended last week that the State Government extend the moratorium on GM crops for another five years.

Lyndley Chopping says the ban means Tasmania could be left behind.

"It would be a terrific shame for Tasmania , because its poppies are such a great industry."

"They're an ideal industry with the high value and then for exporting the low volume crop.

"So Tasmania 's got to maintain its pre-eminent position that we do have in the world production scene."
