Perhaps the British monarch is now contemplating the law of unintended consequences after his recent interview lashing out against genetically modified crops.
Most people are very aware of Prince Charles (UK) recent negative comments regarding GM crops and his full support of the organics industry in particular. His personal views supporting organics and being hostile toward biotechnology have been well-documented over the years.
What's good to recognize is that several years ago others may not have been willing to take a public position disagreeing with the Prince's personal views on biotechnology and GM crops specifically. However, this time instead of remaining silent a number of newspapers, individuals and scientists have stepped forward to contradict the Prince with facts. The Sunday Telegraph (UK) 8.17.08 included an article that 'took the Prince to task' regarding his public comments on the issue of biotechnology.
The pro-biotech message is getting out - being supported - and the story of its success being told.
In the US, the primary party to keep the Biotech message underground has been Biotech. They have tried to keep the consumer in the dark about how our food has been genetically engineered. Hence their lobbying to prevent the labelling of GM foodstuffs. Now that the word is finally out, thanks in large part to the strong backlash from the public finally realizing that rBGH milk is out there and may be harming our growing children as well as ourselves, Biotech and this site act like it has all been a conspiracy against them. We have a right to know what we are eating and feeding our children. Then we can choose whether to buy it or not. That should be our choice, not yours. How much round-up do you want with your dinner? How much do you want to spray on yourself a year? Is it really harmless. What about those rising prices of seed and roundup--is it worth it to you? Check the web.
What's equally good to recognize is that many scientists and consumers agree with the Prince and do thank him for his courage to speak out against Biotech. I rather think many in the media have been unwilling to objectively and critically examine and report on the claims made by and against Biotech for fear of being sued or losing funding. It's time for some real investigative reporting backed up by sound, unrestrained Science. Make that independent scientists, not industry-backed.
