There was widespread coverage of the breakdown of the Doha round WTO talks in Geneva, but surprisingly little said by the US presidential candidates that found its way into the print media.

According to the Washington Post, Senator John McCain (R-AZ) said the breakdown of talks “poses a greater threat to America’s economic future than most voters seem to recognize” which clearly is a strong statement. But there has been virtually nothing from Senator Obama (D-IL) and his campaign. Recently, Senator Obama has kept a broad economic theme without mentioning the talks or much on trade specifics. The Wall Street Journal has an online ‘debate’ with campaign advisors (http://blogs.wsj.com/agenda/category/trade/) where Daniel Tarullo (Obama advisor) stated that the US was right to walk away right now, and talks should resume in the year to come if a deal can be reached.

With the amount of attention focused on trade issues in the campaign to date, the general silence is deafening considering the importance of the WTO talks.
