On June 13th former US Senators Robert Dole and George McGovern were named the 2008 winners of the World Food Prize. They won “for the collaborative leadership in encouraging a global commitment to school feeding, which has enhanced school attendance and nutrition for millions of the world’s poorest children, especially girls.”

The award will be presented October 16 at a ceremony in Des Moines, Iowa, held as part of the World Food Prize’s Norman E. Borlaug International Symposium, which this year focuses on “Confronting Crisis: Agriculture and Global Development in the Next Fifty Years.
The World Food Prize website (www.worldfoodprize.org) has a wealth of information on their organization, this year’s symposium, and recipients of the prize. Take a few minutes to explore their website. It is well worth the time.

The WFP was conceived by Norman Borlaug, winner of the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize for his work on the "Green Revolution." Past winners have come from all over the world, making contributions "to improving the quality, quantity or availability of food." For those not aware, Dole and McGovern come from opposite ends of the American political spectrum. Dole was the 1996 Republican nominee for President; McGovern the 1972 Democratic nominee. Their efforts refreshingly show that despite differences, people can indeed come together working to alleviate and solve problems we face globally.
