Barges get a bum rap. They aren’t flashy like NASCAR vehicles. They aren’t popular with kids like bulldozers and fire trucks. They certainly don’t go on interplanetary voyages like NASA probes.

The price and availability of food have forced there way onto the agenda of the leaders of the G8 countries (the U.S., Canada, Japan, Germany, United Kingdom, Italy, France and Russia) meeting in Hokkaido, northern Japan on July 7-9. They will review input from a June 15 meeting in Okinawa, Japan of the G8 ministers and the European Commissioner responsible for science and technology and ministers and senior officials from Brazil, China, India, Mexico, Philippines, the Republic of Korea and South Africa. According to the notes from the Chairman of the meeting, enhancing agricultural productivity through the use of biotechnology was among the issues discussed.

U.S. pork producers and Chinese pork consumers operated in two different economic worlds until about a year ago. The U.S. is the world’s second largest producer of pork and in 2006 exported 14 percent of its production, but China was a minor market. China is the world’s largest producer and consumer of pork, but traditionally has had limited involvement in international pork trade. Large pork supplies in the U.S. and pork production problems in China have created an opportunity for U.S. producers to avoid extremely low market prices and Chinese consumers to maintain their established eating patterns.
