When I was a kid, I took an interest in bugs. I searched for them under rocks and chased them with nets. There were beetles, crickets, and moths. The prize catch, however, was the monarch butterfly, with its big wings and orange-and-black coloring.

Around the time of the Civil War, train travel was incredibly inefficient. People who planned a short trip from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C., for example, couldn’t go direct. Instead, they took a train from Philadelphia to Baltimore. Then they had to switch lines, moving several city blocks across Baltimore before resuming their journey to Washington.
