NAFTA at 13 – What Comes After NAFTA? PDF Print E-mail

The Economic Research Service of USDA has released NAFTA at 13, the fifth biannual report mandated by Congress on the effects on U.S. agriculture of NAFTA implementation. Most of the agricultural trade among the U.S., Canada and Mexico is already free of tariffs and quotas. The final provisions of NAFTA will be implemented on January 1, 2008.

The U.S.-Korean Free Trade Agreement PDF Print E-mail

Like most Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), the U.S.-Korea FTA is a combination of major policy breakthroughs and work-in-progress. The agreement was reached because President Bush and President Roh said “get it done”; they believe the economic benefits out weigh the political costs of getting the agreement through their respective Congress and National Assembly. The deal will not be completely done until all details are released.

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee Charles Rangel (D-NY) is committed to finding common ground on trade policy with the Bush Administration. The Ways and Means Committee released a one page summary of a 15 page document Rangel is discussing with U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab and other Administration officials. The summary has five major points that have varying degrees of opportunities to fit within a broader free trade agenda.

Trade, Jobs and Trade Promotion Authority PDF Print E-mail

Serious actions on the Doha Round of WTO trade talks and extension of Trade Promotion Authority for President Bush will only happen if businesses forcefully support those efforts. The Business Roundtable, an association of chief executive officers of leading U.S. companies with $4.5 trillion in annual revenues, more than 10 million employees and $90 billion in annual research and development spending, has released two analyses on trade. One paper “Trade and American Jobs - The Impact of Trade on U.S. and State-Level Employment” addresses the gain and loss of U.S. jobs, and the other “We Can’t Stand Still: The Race for International Competitiveness” explains the worldwide increase in Free Trade Agreements (see businessroundtable.org.)

President Bush’s recent trip to Latin American included a one day visit to Guatemala where he helped pack vegetables and talked about the need for social justice. The Guatemalans appreciated the attention from a U.S. presidential visit, but news coverage provided only a glimpse of the challenges and opportunities for Guatemala to more fully participate in international trade through CAFTA-DR and other trade agreements.
