A New Mexico Senate bill that would have changed food-labeling practices has died on the senate floor.
Senate Bill 18, which would have required companies to label genetically-modified food as such, was voted down Thursday when the Senate voted not to adopt a committee report.
“Even though SB 18 is dead this year, it’s clear that New Mexicans want and deserve a label that tells them whether or not their food has been genetically engineered,” said the bill’s author, State Senator Peter Wirth, D-Santa Fe. “GE food labels are a right New Mexican consumers deserve and, while this defeat is a set-back, this discussion will continue at the state and national level.”
The bill had passed the Public Affairs Committee this week.
In a news release on Friday, the nonprofit Food & Water Watch said the group “is disappointed that the Senate did not stand up for the rights of consumers to have basic information about their food this week, but we are not discouraged.”

Laugh it up, New Mexico Political Hacks, the biggest Food Companies are “seeing the light” and are in Washington pushing for National Labeling, because they finally figured out resisting what 61 more civilized nations already have is costing them MUCH more than their investment in “Anti-Prop 37″ and will continue to do so until Labeling is a fait accompli. He who laughs last, laughs best.
This does not surprise me. So many people have no idea what the hell gmos are. Someone ask those senators what their kids and grandkids are eating. Then ask if they also still buy bottled water. I mean someone said not to let the bottles get hot and they should be fine. Did anyone ask what the temp in most storage warehouses is? I’ll bet those senators stopped buying bottled water. Well they really need to pull their head out of the sand!!
